10 Ways to help with Dust in the Home

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

The Vacuum is your friend!

No matter how clean the home may be, it probably still has a little dust. This is a menace everyone has to deal with every day. Getting rid of dust in the home helps to improve air quality, and prolong the life of electrical appliances, furniture, and household electronics. The secret of having a dust-free home is by regular cleaning.

Below is a list of things to do to keep the air clean and have a comfortable and dust-free home.

  1. Use Door Mats

Keep doormats outside and inside the house to trap dirt and keep it from migrating into your home. Get a doormat with bristles to prevent anyone coming from outside from depositing dust particles from shoes to your home. Wash or vacuum the mats regularly to prevent buildup.

  1. Groom Your Pets

Pets are huge carriers of dirt because of their fur. Pet fur tends to attract dust. Groom your pets to avoid dirty places where they get tangled up in dust to help keep dead skin and hair from accumulating dust.

  1. Close Windows

Dust gains access to homes through windows and doors and is visible on windowsills. It is advisable to keep the windows closed, especially on windy days to help minimize dust.

  1. Use a Damp Mop

When cleaning the floor, use a good damp mop. This will help a long way towards eliminating 90 percent of the dust in your home. A damp rag or mop collects and holds dust from surfaces which can then simply be rinsed down the drain.

  1. Beat Area Rugs

Rugs are known to absorb and hide dust particles. One of the best ways to get rid of the dust on rugs is to take them outside and beat them. Typically, rug beaters, which come in rattan, wire, or plastic versions, remove more dust than vacuum cleaners.

  1. Clean Blinds

Dust is drawn to blinds like moths to a flame, so you should clean them regularly.

  1. Install An Air Purifier

Get an air purifier that circulates the air and has a filter that captures dust and dirt. Air purifiers come in various shapes and sizes, from whole-house units to small, portable single-room models.

  1. Vacuum Regularly

Clean your house with a vacuum cleaner once or twice weekly, this will help in eliminating dust. With the new types of available vacuum cleaners which come with built-in HEPA filters to trap smaller particles of dirt and help freshen the air, your house is safe from dust.

  1. Get Rid of Clutter

Get rid of clusters by cleaning items on shelves and in curio cabinets. Dust is good at settling on any surface it comes in contact with. Submit objects like books, bookcases, and others to frequent dusting to get rid of clutter.

  1. Clean Closets

Fabrics also attract dust easily. Declutter closets and keep the door closed to avoid dust from migrating onto clothes in the closet. Dust the closet regularly, along with the rest of your home.

These tips are a great way to reduce dust in your home.

Remember SERVPRO of Palm Desert can also clean your Ducts in your home.  "Like it never even happened"

Why Do Carpets Seem to Smell Worse in Hot Weather?

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

Do your carpets have an unpleasant odor?

The Palm Desert Residents are all to familiar with hot weather. Here in the desert as the Hot Weather increases so does a little known issue that many SERVPRO carpet cleaners have run into in their daily cleanings. The reason carpets seem to have an odor in hot weather is the volatile compounds, the source of the majority of all odors - become much more easily airborne as the room temperature increases. Bacteria grows quickly as temperatures rise, so a carpet that has no detectable odor before you arrive on the job might soon smell after a hot water extraction.

That's why, for example, an area of carpet soiled by a pet in the winter might not be noticed until it gets warmer in the spring and summer. When a carpet cleaner cleans this hidden urine spot with hot water, the heat and moisture provides food to the bacteria that feeds on urine residues and they start to multiply. Bacteria also feeds on food residues, such as a glass of milk spilled in the winter that was blotted, but not fully cleaned. This kind of soil can smell sour after carpet cleaning. Bacteria multiply very rapidly once activated, thus causing odors to appear quickly.

SERVPRO of Palm Desert technicians have the ability to use their SERVPRO products to deal with these stains and unpleasant odors and clean your carpets "Like it never even happened."

Dryer Vent Cleaning

8/4/2017 (Permalink)

Check your dryer vent on a regular basis.

Excessive lint build up occurs slowly and gradually. You don't realize it is happening. You think that by cleaning out the lint filter after each use you are doing your job and maintaining the dryer. Not quite!

A full load of wet clothes contains about a half gallon of water. Lint is created from the clothes as water is removed during the drying process. This lint will build up in crevices deep down inside the lint filter trap, and all along the dryer vent hose. At the end of the day, your dryer is the number 1 source of fire in the home.

In 1999 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) developed a report called the “Report on Electric and Gas Clothes Dryers.” In that report, they determined that of the 15,000 fires studied in one year, electric dryers were over 2.5 times more likely to be the cause of the fire than gas dryer. Fires originated most frequently from two places: dryer venting and the lint trap.

What are the warning signs that dangerous lint build-up is occurring in your dryer and venting system? Well, the symptoms may include:

* Clothes take longer and longer to dry

* Clothes don't fully dry

* Clothes are hotter than normal at the end of the drying cycle

* The outside of dryer gets very hot

* The outside exhaust vent flapper does not open very much indicating low exhaust velocity

* Laundry room becomes more humid than it is usually

* Burnt smell is evident in the laundry room

Give us a call at SERVPRO of Palm Desert and we will help you eliminate this fire hazard in your home.
